Green Ember Post (Collaboration with Rosie from Fiddling On The Farm)

Hello, everyone! I hope you’re having a great day. Sorry I haven’t posted in a while… but life’s been busy. I was recently asked to do a collaboration post about The Green Ember by Rosie from Fiddling on the Farm, and I’m very excited to do this! She’s an amazing blogger, and she writes such inspired posts. It’s amazing to read her work. I’ve included a little bio from Rosie for those of you who haven’t visited her lovely site, so I’ll insert that here…

Hello! My name is Rosie, and I’m a teenage girl with the blog, Fiddling on the Farm. I’ve been blogging for a little less than a year, and I’ve had so much fun connecting with other bloggers! On my site, I share books (reviews, hauls, etc.), writing, and really whatever I feel like talking about! One of my favorite things about blogging is seeing other bloggers doing the same thing I am. I hope you enjoy checking out my site!

Thanks again for doing this, Rosie! Now… onto the questions!

What is The Green Ember’s synopsis?

Heather and Picket are extraordinary rabbits with ordinary lives until calamitous events overtake them, spilling them into a cauldron of misadventures. They discover that their own story is bound up in the tumult threatening to overwhelm the wider world.

Kings fall and kingdoms totter. Tyrants ascend and terrors threaten. Betrayal beckons, and loyalty is a broken road with peril around every bend.

Where will Heather and Picket land? How will they make their stand?

Who wrote the Green Ember series?

S.D. Smith is the Christian author of the bestselling middle-grade fantasy series The Green Ember. These books have reached hundreds of thousands of readers. He lives with his wife and four kids in West Virginia, writing adventure tales in his writing shed. As a child, he loved playing sports (i.e. basketball, baseball, cricket, rugby) and reading books (i.e. Narnia, Boxcar Children, Little Women) There are currently ten books in the Green Ember series.

What’s your favorite Green Ember book?

Rosie: I really enjoyed the third book, Ember Rising, because, well, I can’t tell you! 🙂 You’ll just have to read it for yourself and find out! But personally, I thought this book was very exciting and kind of wraps up a lot of cliff-hangers from the previous two books.

Erin: I personally enjoy the first Green Ember book, originally published in 2014. I really enjoy this story, and I think it’s a very moving fantasy story. While I love all four of the main series, and I do like the spin-offs, the first is the one that I like best. I think it tells an incredible story, and I really like to read that one.

Who’s your favorite Green Ember character?

Rosie: I actually have two, the twins, Coleden and Heyna Blackstar. I really like their characters in all the Green Ember books, because I love how loyal they both are to protect their friends.

Erin: Smalls! Smalls is my absolute favorite Green Ember character. I think that he’s amazingly written, and I wish that I could say more about him, but I don’t want to because of spoilers… but if you’ve read the series, you know why I like him so much.

Have you read the audiobooks of The Green Ember?

Rosie: I am currently listening to the first book in audio, which has been very enjoyable so far. I really like Joel Clarkson’s narration of the book.

Erin: Yes! I read three of the four books on audiobook, and I loved them all. Joel Clarkson’s narration is brilliant, and I loved hearing the stories that I had already enjoyed reading so much. I definitely recommend reading them, and I believe that the first is available for free, if you go to S.D. Smith’s site.

Where did you first hear about The Green Ember?

Rosie: I was recommended it by a family member, so I had it on my book list for quite a while, and I finally decided to try it! 🙂

Erin: My older brother recommended this series, and I was so glad that I got to them, because I still enjoy them years later.

What is your favorite time of year to read the Green Ember books?

Rosie: Anytime! I don’t usually find that books are better when read at certain times of the year (except for a few exceptions!), so as with the Green Ember books, anytime! But if I had to choose a season, I would agree with Erin on autumn! Although, I prefer hot chocolate instead of tea, with a good book of course… 🙂

Erin: This is my autumn series. I love reading these stories when the days get colder. Drinking a hot cup of tea and reading Green Ember… that’s pretty great. Yeah, I like hot chocolate, too, but tea is my go-to.

What series would you most compare the Green Ember to?

Rosie: I haven’t read very many books with animals as the characters instead of humans, but from what I’ve heard, I think the Green Ember books sound similar to the Redwall series by Brian Jacques, in that, the Redwall books have a lot of war between prey and predator.

Erin: I’ve read a few books about rabbits, like Rabbit Hill by Robert Lawson and some other books like that, but these books definitely have a Narnian feel to them, which is one of my favorite book series.

Erin: Thank you for reaching out to me about doing this post, Rosie. I’ve really enjoyed talking about these great books, and doing a collaboration post with you. Thanks for doing this with me. I hope you had as much fun as I did.

Rosie: Absolutely! I’m so glad we were able to do this! I really appreciate your willingness to take time from your day to work on this with me! I had a lot of fun! ❤

Everyone, please make sure to check out Rosie’s blog, because it’s so amazing. You should really check it out, which your can do here! I was so happy to do this post, and I had such a good time. Thanks again, Rosie!

Sunshine Blogger Tag

So, somehow I missed a recent nomination for a blogger tag. I’m sorry, Alicia! Anyway, although this is a little late, I am going to post this tag. You can read Alicia’s answers here. First let’s look at the rules…

The Rules:

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you and link back to their post (Thanks so much and sorry it took so long, Alicia!)
  • Answer the questions (I couldn’t answer a couple of them, so I just took them out!)
  • Nominate eleven bloggers and ask them eleven questions

Alicia’s Questions:

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Well, to be honest, I’d rather just stay with my family. If we were all moving somewhere, it’d be fun to live by the beach, or just do some travelling, as long as we stayed together.

If you could spend a day with one author, who would it be? I really don’t know. I mean, there are a lot of authors I’d like to meet… if we’re going with a classical author I’d like to meet L.M. Montgomery, Charles Dickens, or C.S. Lewis but I’d also like to meet some more modern authors like Janette Oke, or Sally Clarkson.

Dream pet? My wonderful rabbit, Rosalind.

You can go to any college or university all expenses paid, where are you going? I’d like to go to Liberty University Online, ideally.

What three books would you take to an abandoned island? The Bible, obviously. However, I’m going to say that one is a freebie, because everyone should have a Bible, right? Right. Okay, so now I get three more, and even though I already cheated, I’m going to cheat again by including the awesome 7-in-1 Narnia collection, because you need a little Narnia. And then, since the collection thing is really helpful, I’ll also pick my awesome Charles Dickens collection with A Tale of Two Cities, A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, and Great Expectations. I haven’t read all of them, but I would definitely need some classics. For my last one, I think I would pick a more contemporary novel, like Love Me Tender by Janice Hanna Thompson, The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall, or maybe even a big collection of Tintin comics by Herge. (I did fit 92 books into the question that asked for three, sorry.)

Would you rather be a morning person or a night person? Both! I’m not joking. I love being up early in the morning, but I also love being up at night… you see my problem. Ideally, I would get up early… but that just doesn’t seem to happen.

Would you rather meet Peter Pan or Aladdin? Very interesting question. I haven’t read Arabian Nights, so I’m not sure how much I like him. I have read Peter Pan, though. So, I’m just going to sort of judge off the Disney characters, and the answer is… probably Aladdin. From the impression I have of Peter Pan, he’s really not very nice all the time, whereas I like what I know about Aladdin. Then again, Peter Pan would be very entertaining… plus you could get to go to Neverland.

Do you need sleep to function? Um, yes, who doesn’t?

Any-who, I’m redoing the look of my blog, and I’m using Canva to do it. I’m also going to be changing the things I write about, trying to write about more relevant things, and the things that you guys like, so please be sure and comment when you like a post.

I’ve also started a new community page, and if you click there, you will see pictures and links for all of my blogging friends! Thanks, guys! I really appreciate you and your blogs!

Well, I hope you like my new logo, and my new sign-off, so goodbye for now. God bless you!

The Answers

What is your favorite and/or least favorite part of your blog?

Well, my favorite part of my blog has just been talking to and meeting other bloggers who are trying to live their life for Christ. My least favorite part…. hmm… probably when I make an error and look really silly, hehe!

What would be a book you’d recommend to anyone for any age?

Okay, well, obviously, the Bible, but if I was picking a fiction book, I would go with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. Yes, it is written for children, but you can’t ever really grow out of it, hehe. It’s too great.

What do you dream your future job will look like?

I’d love to be a stay-at-home mom, but I also hope to one day be a published author, and maybe play music on the side. So, yeah, my dream is a mix of all that, I guess.

Do you play sports? What’s your favorite sport to play?

No. I’m not a sports girl (but I’m going to try to be more active). My favorite sport to play is basketball, but I’m still no good at it, and I don’t play it often. I love to watch baseball, though (well, the Dodgers. I don’t like any other teams).

What is something you are passionate about (just anything)?

Oh, wow. I’m passionate about soooooooooooooooooooo many things. This question is practically impossible. Let me try to think of one thing that I”m passionate about…. okay, let’s go with music. I love my music (playing it, listening to it, talking about it), and I am so passionate about it. It feels me with such deep emotion that sometimes I actually become extremely upset because I want so badly to share the emotional stimulation I get from the music with others, and can’t (probably because I’m too passionate about it, hehe!). I’m also very passionate about certain movies and most books.

Who’s your favorite author?

Ooooh, this is tough. I’m a budding Austenite, a fairly enthusiastic of Dickens, a huge Narnia fan (although I haven’t read anything else by C.S. Lewis), and I love to read both Janette Oke’s stories and the Sally Clarkson books I’ve read. So, really, all book. I love all the books, and all the authors.

What’s your top hobby/project right now?

Oooh, good question. Well, I’m starting up school again, so I’m going to be pretty busy with that, but I’m also trying to play my guitar a ton, and spend more with my little angel/rabbit Rosalind.

How do you celebrate Christmas?

We’ve recently begun viewing Christmas not as a day, but as a season. We enjoy the little moments that come our way, and we embrace the warmth and glow of the wonderful season by watching movies, playing music, reading books, doing activities and crafts, and generally just enjoying the season. We spend lots the entire season together, just our family, and it’s wonderful. I love the way we celebrate Christmas, because it’s centered around our faith and Jesus.

What kind of movie watcher are you?

So, usually, I watch a movie, and I become at least somewhat engrossed in the plot, but the movies I truly love I owe to the characters. As you may know from reading my blog, the characters are the most important part of any book or movie to me, so the characters are what I pay attention to when watching a movie.

Why are you a blogger/writer/whatever-you-classify-yourself-as?

I blog because I’m just a Christian teen. As I’ve said many times, I’m determined to live out my life for Jesus. I want to help others to do the same, and I believe the Lord has opened this door to me, and I’m going to step through it, to try and guide other people to him. Blogging is fun, but I love the thought that I may be doing something to help someone else even more than writing.

What kind of music do you listen to the most?

I could listen to Michael W. Smith all day (and sometimes do, hehe), and I also love music from the ’50s, music with great guitar solos featuring great guitarists, movie scores from movies I like, music by my favorite artists (there are a lot of them), romantic music, emotionally stirring music, genres that I particularly like (there’s a whole list of them!), and a lot more. I’m a music girl. What can I say?

Random Facts About Me

  1. John is my favorite book of the Bible, and I love to read John 1 over and over again
  2. I love to play my guitar, although I’m not really great at it, but getting better!

New Year’s Book Tag

Happy New Year’s, everyone!

I was tagged for the New Year’s Book Tag by my very good friend, Emma, at Bookish Daughters of the King. She’s a very sweet blogger, and a very nice person. I love to talk with her about books, and I’m honored to do this book tag. Thanks so much, Emma!

How many books are you planning to read in 2022?

Well, just like Emma, I don’t like to set too strict a goal for how many books I’m going to read, but I think I’ll go for over 50! The problem is, I have trouble remembering to keep track of the books I read, but I’m definitely going to be trying this year!

Name 5 books that you didn’t get to this year but want to make a priority in 2022:

Well, I want to keep reading Melanie Dickerson’s Hagenheim series (I’ve read two of them already, and enjoyed them both). I’m also so excited to read Porch Swing Girl by Taylor Bennett (I’m hoping to read it this summer, maybe). I’m looking into reading From the Start by Melissa Tagg, and I’m also looking to read something by Francine Rivers, or even something by Karen Kingsbury. I’ve got a lot of books I want to read!

What genre do you want to read more of?

Well, I’d like to try and read some more Christian fiction, but I’m also trying to read more non-fiction pieces, and I hope to read a lot more classics, too!

Name 3 non book related goals for 2022:

I want to work more on my Bible reading routine, keeping up on my bullet journal, and improving my cooking skills. I have lots of goals, but those are three of them!

What’s a book that you’ve had forever that you still need to read?

Um… I’m not actually sure. Usually, if I get a book, I read it pretty quickly. I have a collection of Charles Dickens books, and I’m thinking about reading one of those soon, but I’m still considering some other options. I have a few books that I’m going to be able to get on Hoopla (my digital library), and I want to get to some of those, but usually I read a book pretty quickly if I actually buy it, hehe.

What’s one book you started in 2021 and plan to finish in 2022?

My mom and I began reading The Fiddler by Beverly Lewis a few days ago, and we’re going to finish that this year, so I guess that counts, hehe!

One word that you’re hoping 2022 will be:

Well, the word I’m hoping my blog will define this year is peaceful. I want to make my little corner of the Internet a safe and peaceful Christian environment for people who are trying to live their lives for Jesus.

Tag a friend!

I want to tag Alicia Marentette from Alicia Marentette!

Well, Happy New Year to all of you, and I hope you have a great time! God bless you, and thanks again, Emma!

The Bookworm’s Tag

I was recently tagged by Alicia Marentette to do The Bookworm’s Tag, and I’m really excited to get going on this one! Thanks, Alicia!

Here are the rules!

  • Thank and link to the blogger who nominated you. (Thanks, Alicia!)
  • Include the tag graphic in your post/Link to the original tag
  • Answer the ten questions the blogger asked
  • Nominate between five and ten bloggers
  • Ask your nominees ten book-related questions!
  • Don’t feel bound to these rules
  • (Most importantly) Have fun!

Do you prefer to read out loud, read in your mind, or listen to books?

So, personally, I prefer to read in my mind, because I’m able to go faster, and I really like being able to determine my own pace, but really, I can enjoy all different sorts of ways to read. There really is no right answer, in my opinion. As long as it’s reading, hehe!

What is the most boring book you have ever read (or tried!) to read?

This one’s tough… I can’t really think of one. I mean, there have been some boring ones, but not one in particular comes to mind. Hmm…

Are you a person who will cry in a good book, or are you non-emotional when it comes to reading?

Um… I definitely cry. And laugh. It’s an emotion, I feel it when I read. I really enjoy being able to read these books and really feel like I’m involved, so I tend to be very emotional during any good book (the bad ones I have trouble crying at).

Have you ever tried to write a book? Is so, did you succeed!? If not, would you like to one day?

Okay, so I’ve successfully written ten full-length novels, accompanied by a whole bunch of short stories, and miiiiiiilions of unfinished books. Okay, maybe not millions, but you get the idea. One day, I’m going to try and get some of mine published! 😄

What is the ultimate worst book series ever, in your opinion? And what is the best, in your opinion?

Wow. I don’t know what the worst book series ever is. To be honest, I don’t really keep reading a series if I really dislike it, so that’s a tough one. The best is probably The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, but I also love The Green Ember by S.D. Smith. I kind of really like Christian fantasy, because it’s just a fun genre.

Do you typically like the movies better than the books? Why or why not?

Um, when they make a movie of a book, it’s typically not as good as the book. Unless it’s a short story that they made into a movie, like It’s A Wonderful Life, because the movie is a lot better than the book. There are, evidently, exceptions to this. In my opinion, The Three Musketeers 1993 film adaptation is much better than the book, for instance.

What is your favorite drink to have while reading or writing?

I’m really a tea girl, but I also love chocolate milk, and strawberry milk is my FAVORITE, so really, I vary around. If I’m reading or writing a Christmas book, you kinda need to drink some cocoa, but really, it changes due to the circumstances.

Who is your favorite author from each genre (Christian, fantasy, etc)?

Alright! My favorite Christian author is Janette Oke. My favorite fantasy author is C.S. Lewis (big surprise, right?), If we’re going with mystery, I’ll just say Carolyn Keene for all those good Nancy Drew books. For classics, I really like Jane Austen. If we’re looking at children’s fiction, I may have to go with Jeanne Birdsall for her wonderful Penderwicks series that has entertained me for so many endless hours.

If you could choose one author from present or past to meet, who would it be?

I’d love to talk to C.S. Lewis, because I just think that would be AMAZING!!! I mean, he’s the greatest Christian fantasy writer ever, and I’d love to ask him just a couple of questions. *Wistful sigh*. It would be fantastic.

When is your favorite time to read, where, and how?

I like to read late at night, early in the morning, or really any other time throughout the day. I need to be at home to really enjoy a book (I’m a true home-body), and I want to hold the book in my hands (not digitally). I’m just that type of girl.

Thanks to Alicia Marentette for tagging me! I really enjoyed doing this post, and your questions were so good that I’m not even going to write new questions, so anybody who’s doing this, use Alicia’s! They’re awesome, and I had a ton of fun writing the answers.

For tagging others to do this post, I’d like to choose…

Emma @ Bookish Daughters of the King, Trina @ Guiding My House, Megan @ Not So Perfect, Vanessa Hall @ Vanessa Hall Author, and Hannah F. @ His Priceless Daughters.

No pressure! You don’t have to do this, but if you do, I hope you enjoy it.

God bless you!
